About the health, safety and environment test

The CITB Health, safety & environment test helps raise standards across the industry.

It should be used as a stepping stone for employers and their workforce to develop their knowledge even further. Find out more below:

About the test

Different tests have been created to meet the needs of different trades and professions.
Make sure you prepare and take the right one.

If you are taking the HS&E test for a card to access construction sites, be sure to check the
scheme requirements for that card so that you book the correct level of test. Please click
here to find out more about the card schemes. All tests last for 45 minutes and have 50
multiple-choice questions made up of behavioural case studies and knowledge questions to
check your understanding of how to behave on site and raise your awareness of health,
safety and environmental issues.

Tests available

All tests include the behavioural case study questions and the five core knowledge sections of:

  • Legal and management
  • Health and welfare
  • General safety
  • High risk activities
  • Environment
